I made what’s called an alternate movie poster of the film A Quiet Place (2018) for a project from my graphic design class.
The background of my poster is a photo I edited of the Springtown Truss Bridge in New York which is the exact bridge that appears in the film. I drew the creature first traditionally by hand, scanned the image, and then edited it in Illustrator. It was a lot more detailed before I combined it with the background image because I took some time studying the appearance of the alien so I’d have an image that’s just right (thankfully Paramount provided image stills around the time A Quiet Place came out, so I didn’t have to pause the movie multiple times by the end of the film. You can barely see those agile monsters until the end of the movie which is good for a horror film, but a hassle if you’re trying to make a good reference sheet), therefore I have a few drawings from me figuring out what they look like. I intentionally simplified the creature’s appearance here to keep that “fear of the unknown” aspect that most of the movie had intact, you may be able to catch a glimpse of what they look like at the start of the film but you don’t really know what those aliens are like until the climax.
I went with a more artistic approach to stay true with some of the examples given from the last discussion. I originally wanted to use an image of the bridge taken at night with a one-point perspective in mind, but I couldn’t find any photographs of this bridge with those two specific things, so I opted to use a greyscale color scheme instead. I used a font called PRINTF-Regular which I downloaded from Adobe Fonts because it could work with any horror movie and it didn’t resemble too much like the typography that was used in the movie. The red text was inspired by the tagline on the official posters for this film, where the words “hear” and “hunt” are also in red, I also wanted to make the title stand out from the rest of the poster so I made that red as well.
Below are the sketches I made and the PNG I used for the final product:
